Itisalsoarebrandingofassistivetechnology.Ifyoutellstudentsthathavea

disabilitythatisnotapparenttothegeneralpublicthattheyshoulduseassistive

technologythen,theyarelesslikelytouseit.Whenyouhavepeoplethatdonot

haveadisabilityusingtechnologythatwasoncethoughtofasassistivetechnology

youneedanewname.Whatthisnewgenerationofmorecommonlessexpensive

mainstreamassistivetechnologyisessentiallygivingusuniversalaccess.Ifwe

pointoutthatthetechnologyachildisusingisthesameastheirparentsand

teachers’smartphones,thenthereisnostigma.Wewanteveryonetolearnand

everyonetohaveaccesstothecurriculum.So,thetermtouseisUDLtechnology

orUDLeducationaltechnology.UniversaldesignforLearningisaboutremoving

barriersfromlearningjustlikeassistivetechnology.Theideaofaregular

educationinitiativebeingusedtodefinetechnologyfordiverselearnersiscritical

formarketingtostudents.

Universal design for learning encourages technology that is for education and

withinthatconceptistechnologyforpeoplewithdisabilities.Wecoulduseother

termslikeuniversalaccess,butthatsoundslikeapolitewayofsayingsomeone

with a disability. In a truly inclusive society, we not only include everyone we

makeeveryonefeelcomfortablebeingpartofagroupandallowingthemtoblend

inawaythatpeoplecannotseethedifferences.

People have to understand that there was a desegregation movement for people

withdisabilitiesinourpublicschoolsthatstartedinthe1970’s.Thisstartedby

allowing some people in the public schools that would have gone to school

elsewhere.Thisalsoallowedsomepeopletospendpartofthedayinaregular

classroomandnotbeingsegregatedinanotherwingofthebuilding.Inthe1990’s

wesawmoreinclusionclassesthathadspecialeducationstudentsstartingtohave

regulareducatorsteachingmoreoftheirclasses.Inthe2000’swesawawaveof

standardizedteststhatforcedtheschoolstohavetoconsiderindividualsthathave

lowertestscoresasbeingimportanttolifttheschool’srating.Thisfurtherforced

schoolstoapplythesameorverysimilarstandardstoeverystudentpossible.

We don’t look at people with disabilities as have an ongoing civil rights

movement. Still, large sums of money are spent on people with disabilities.

Peopleinoursocietyseeaneedtotakecareofothers.Thebestthingthatcanbe

doneistoempowerpeopletohelpthemselves.Technologyisbecomingcheaper,

better and more mainstream. People with disabilities have become more

independentbecauseoftheriseoftechnology.

Itiseasiertofindthetechnologythenitistogetpeopletouseit.ThetermUDL

technologyisamoreappealingwaytohelpmarketthetechnology.Appledidnot

invent the tablet or the MP3 player. Apple changed our society because they

convincedpeopletousethetechnologyandmadethetechnologymoreappealing

withoutstandingmarketing.Changingtheconversationandthevocabularycanbe

more important than finding the right technology. If a child feels that they are

different, they are far less likely to use technology. If you make the technology

sociallyacceptableandshowthateveryoneisusingthetechnology,thenyouwill

seeprogress.

Introduction



There are many very good books that will teach you the concepts that make up

universaldesignforlearning.Allthebooksdirectlyorindirectlysuggestthatyou

use technology to enhance your UDL classroom. However, they rarely go into

specifics of what technology to use. This book gives you a massive amount of

optionsregardingwhattechnologytousetotransformyourUDLclassroomintoa

21st-centuryclassroom.Often,thebesttechnologyissimpleandeffective.Ilike

tousethewords“timeequitable”andthatmeansyouputinalittlebitoftimeand

get a powerful tool in return. I favor technology that is simple enough to be

adaptedforalargeaudiencebuteffectiveenoughtomakearealdifference.The

other big key is matching a technology to a specific subject area, class, and

curriculum. This often takes creativity.When I talk about technology integration

the key word is integration. We all know about technology and can learn it.

However,whenyoumatchtherighttechnologyandcanexplainitthenyoubecome

atrueintegrator.

Oneofthebiggradualchangesineducationisthemovementofspecialeducation

studentsfromspecialeducationintoregulareducation.Thisispartlybecauseof

cost and standardized testing. You cannot ignore a struggling student anymore

because teachers and administrators are judged based on statics derived from

standardizedtests.Ifenoughstudentsfailthenthedistrictfails.Thiscanbegood

becauseitforcesdistrictstodealwithsomeofthemostchallengingpopulations

andtoeducatethem.Thereareanumberofunwantedsideeffects.Thiscancause

a lotofstresson thestudents andteachers. Now we are seeing,in manycases,

regulareducationteachersbeingtheprimaryteachersofstudentswithdisabilities.

Regular education teachers now have to educate students with more and more

severedisabilities thanever before. You have students thatpre-1970 would not

have been allowed in the building and post 1970’s were taught in special

educationclassrooms.Nowregulareducationteachersaregoingtobetheprimary

educators of many of these students. Even if the child is being educated in a

special education class the special education teacher has to teach the regular

education standards. When you have to teach a class of students with various

challenging problems you have to have an excellent strategy that will work for

everyone. Special education teachers often use multi-sensory instruction. The

regulareducationstrategyhasevolved.

TheconceptofUDLisstartingtogaininpopularity.Theideaofmultiplewaysof

representation has been articulated before. What makes UDL superior is the

conceptofassessmentallowingstudentstocompletethestandardthroughmultiple

means,methods,andactions.TheuseoftechnologywithUDLcancreateahigh

level of engagementand muchfaster feedback. Technology canbreak down just

the overwhelming majority of barriers to learning or at least make the learning

curveshorter.Theexplosionoftechnologyoverwhelmsmany.Therearetoomany

choices.Thisbookisdesignedtoshortenthepathtotherighttechnology.

Someofthetechnologyinthisbookisassistive technology.Othertechnologyin

this book 10 years ago would have been described that way. Most of the

technologyinthisbookisinagrayarea.Itcouldbeusedforsomeonethathasa

disabilityorsomeonethatdoesnothaveone.Thetrendinthefieldistechnology

thatisassistivetechnologyorisbasedonitsideasbecomingcheaper,betterand

beingusedbypeoplethatsometimesdon’thaveadisability.

WhatisUniversalDesignforLearning?

UniversalDesignforLearningistheideathatadiversegroupofstudentscanmeet

different standards through different means. What the students are learning are

presentedinmanyways.Thiscouldmean,apicture,video,article,lecture,real-

life examples, software, interactive website other representation. With UDL, a

student is given multiple means to express their ideas and take actions to meet

classroom goals. It also should mean the implementation of technology. UDL is

backedwithbrainresearch.Ittakesintoaccounthowwelearnwithvariousparts

ofourbrain.Goalsshouldbedesignedforallstudentslearning.Eachstudentcan

meet the same goal or standard with a different representation that shows they

have learnedthe standard. TotrulyunderstandUDLIrecommendthatyougo to

TherearealsomanybooksabouttheUDLyouneedmoredetailsorexamples.

Withthemovementofspecialeducationstudentsgettingmoreandmoreofhisor

herinstruction in theregular classroom UDL isaway to helpregular education

teachers reach everyone. It also helps teachers find ways to reach many other

populations that present various challenges. The technologies that I recommend

are very UDL. Universal Design for Learning might be a way to reach special

needs students in the regular classroom, but it is not special education. When

studentswithspecialneedsaresuccessful,theygetservicesinregulareducation.

It is important to include regular educators and parents in the discussion. The

technologyIwriteaboutisnotjustforspecialeducation.Itisforeveryonewith

differentlearningstyles.Ifyouwanttogetallstudentsengaged,thenyouhaveto

learnUDLandusetechnologywithit.

Whatisassistivetechnology?

Assistivetechnologyisanydevicethatsomeonewithadisabilityusestocomplete

a task or improve their ability to function. High-tech assistive technology is

computers,softwareor another electronicdevicethata personwith adisability

uses to improve function or to perform a task. There are legal definitions of

assistivetechnology.Ifyouweretoreadatextbookthedefinition,theywouldbe

slightly different and have a lot more words. I think most people know that a

personwithadisabilityusingapencilisnotusingassistivetechnology.Theexact

definitioncanbedebated.Theconceptholdstrue.

The new generation of assistive technology does not look like assistive

technology. Ifa studentuses aniPad to performa task theyotherwise couldnot

perform shouldthat be considered assistive technology? IfIplay agame onmy

iPaditisnotassistivetechnology.Whenpeopleuseawordpredictionfeatureon

anapponasmartphonetheydon’tcallitassistivetechnology.Yet,Icouldshow

youanumberofprogramsthatdowordpredictionthatareassistivetechnology.I

have two points. There is some nice real estate between the definition of some

assistive technology and some UDL technology. Assistive technology has gone

mainstream. Microsoft and Apple are making assistive technology for operating

systems.GoogledocumentsandtheGooglesearchapponyourphonebothhavea

speech to text feature. You can talk to your smartphone and it talks back. The

people doing this don’t have a disability. It is not marketed in many cases as

assistive technology. Other times, it is called assistive technology. It is very

subjectivewhenyoudecideisitassistivetechnology.

HowtosellSchoolsonusingUDLTechnology?

Proper implementation of technology can help students be successful in less

restrictiveenvironments.Thatmightmeanallowingastudenttoremaininregular

educationoratleastseeingmoresuccessinschool.Thecostofthetechnologyis

offsetby nothaving theschool absorbashigh of aspecial education placement

cost. If the school district has the confidence of the parents, then it is far less

likely to have to pay for expensive outof districtplacements or to have to add

moreservices.Withthelawoflargenumberoveraperiodoftime,aneffective

program will more than pay for itself. A creative person can find an app or

technologyforjustaboutanything.Withthisbook,yourworkjustgotaloteasier.

What I recommend is a proactive approach. If you utilize much of this cost-

effective technology openly available to the masses of students, then situations

will not escalate and thus protect valuable resources while delivering a higher

gradeeducation.Thekeyismakingthetechnologyreadilyavailableandsocially

acceptable.Ifastudentcanread,writeandprocessinformationwithtechnology,

thentheycanmeetgoalsandachievestandards.Weallusetechnologytoperform

manyofthesetasksalready.Itisamatterofaddingthetechnologythatisoutlined

inthisbookandothertechnologythatisofteninexpensiveandavailable.Thiswill

allowstudentstoaccessthecurriculumbyremovingbarriers.Thatwillcreatea

path to achieve goals and meet the standards. Successfully using technology to

achievegoalsistherealsellingpoint.Igiveyouenoughoptionsthatyoushould

beabletosolvemorethanafewproblems.

WhatisUDLEducationalTechnology?

Special education students’ primary educators are regular education teachers in

manycasesandthetrendismovestrongerinthatdirection.UDLtechnologyisa

partialre-banding.Theidea isthatthetechnologyisfor everyone.Ifyoutella

studentwithadisabilitythisisaspecialtechnologyforaspecialstudentwitha

disabilitythentheyarelesslikelytouseit.However,ifyousaytothemitisUDL

technologytoincludepeoplewithdifferentlearningstylesthenyouaremuchmore

likelytogetthemtouseit.Itismucheasiertopickthetechnologythanitistoget

someonetouseit.Oftenyoucanuseatechnologywiththeentireclassmakingthe

needtoexplainthetechnologyevenlessimportant.Technologythatwasmadeto

makeeveryone’slifeeasierisnowbeingusedbypeoplewithdisabilitiestoget

around.GPStechnologytopreventpeoplefromgettinglostcanalsohelppeople

withvisualimpairments.Thesmarthomeswhereyoucancontrolaspectsofyour

home with a computer have practical applications for people with disabilities.

The term UDL technology is designed to describe technology that is used by a

largegroupofpeoplewithneedsandsomeofthemmightuseitbecausetheyhave

adisability.Whenateacherusestechnologyinaclassroomtohelpstudentsthat

have different needs and some of them are special needs then that is UDL

technology. UDL Technology or UDL Educational Technology is about using

technologyindifferentways.Thatcanmeantechnologyfortheentireclassorjust

one person. It is about removing barriers from learning and empowers your

studentswithtoolstoenablesuccess.

Thetechnologyitselfhaschangedsodramaticallyfromdecadespastthatitistruly

verydifferentinscopeanddesign.Newwordsarecreatedallthetimetoexplain

anexperiencethatisdistinctlydifferentthanwhathasbeendoneinthepast.The

newgenerationoftechnologyneedsaname.Thetechnologyisnotalwaysforthe

disabled,anditisoftenforeveryone.Thenewgenerationoftechnologyallowsa

diverse populationofpeople toaccess informationin themodern age. The new

technologysetsitselfapartfromtheoldergenerationoftechnology.
